Ok. This is the oops (recorded with digital camera and re-typed in as
/var/log/messages et. al. had nothing).  The controller is:

The error message when I run /sbin/hdparm -d1 -c3 -m16 -k1 /dev/hdb
and /sbin/hdparm -d1 -c3 -m16 -k1 /dev/hda is:
