FWIW, I just installed Gnome 2.10 on one of my machines and the mixer is *drastically* better. The views are split into Playback and Capture, the widgets are much cleaner looking, and most of the "advanced" controls are hidden by default. Many of the bug reports about incomprehensible mixer, especially for the emu10k1, will be resolved when users switch.
