It sounds like there are other users who have capture working.  Keep in
mind there are many, many variations of hardware that could be labeled
"M-Audio Foo 7.1".  That soundcard matrix is the result of lots of
painful trial and error, as you now know.

But, yes, it would be better if the soundcard matrix could be updated
more promptly.  Maybe someone could approach the ALSA developers and
volunteer to maintain it.
