While not directly related to your failure (you should paste the actual
build failure if you'd like anyone to try to fix it), I can confirm that
1.4.10 builds with GCC 3.4.2, Binutils 2.16.91.0.3, and Glibc 2.3.3.

Haven't booted it yet though, but it built! (To be fair, I've had no
problems building silo for some time)
