I double checked it this morning, and that fix was definitely applied.

I made a new kernel anyways, simply to be thorough. The new kernel,
which DEFINITELY has the patch applied shows the same esp symptoms.

I took a log of it booting with esp_debug=2047 and the esp debugging was
identical.

So, while I certainly don't disagree with your findings, this is not the
resolution to the problem.
