awk 'BEGIN { FS=":" } /family/ {fam=$2} /model[^ ]/ {mod=$2} /stepping/

step }' /proc/cpuinfo

Will get me the right filename, but surely that's not user-friendly at
all...

So no, that's not an improvement over /dev/microcode
