In the interests of trying to avoid a ton more class files, could you
tweak this to do something like:

GNOMEBASEBUILDCLASS ??= "autotools"

inherit ${GNOMEBASEBUILDCLASS}

and then 

GNOMEBASEBUILDCLASS = "meson"
inherit gnomebase-autotools

(or the other way around but you get the idea)
