Hi all,
This patch series addresses the ideea of saving data from a single vcpu instance.
First it starts by adding *save_one functions, then it introduces a handler for the
new save_one* funcs and makes use of it in the hvm_save and hvm_save_one funcs.
The final 2 patches are used for clean up. The first one removes the save* funcs and
renames the save_one* to save.
The last patch removes the save_one* handler that is no longer used.
Cheers,
Alexandru Isaila (11):
x86/cpu: Introduce vmce_save_vcpu_ctxt_one() func
x86/hvm: Introduce hvm_save_tsc_adjust_one() func
x86/hvm: Introduce hvm_save_cpu_ctxt_one func
x86/hvm: Introduce hvm_save_cpu_xsave_states_one
x86/hvm: Introduce hvm_save_cpu_msrs_one func
x86/hvm: Introduce hvm_save_mtrr_msr_one func
x86/hvm: Introduce viridian_save_vcpu_ctxt_one()
x86/hvm: Add handler for save_one funcs
x86/domctl: Don't pause the whole domain if only
x86/hvm: Remove redundant save functions
x86/hvm: Remove save_one handler

This patch is focused on moving the for loop to the caller so
now we can save info for a single vcpu instance with the save_one
handlers.

This patch removes the redundant save functions and renames the
save_one* to save. It then changes the domain param to vcpu in the save
funcs.

Afaict hvm_save_entry() can return 0 and -1 at present. You convert
this to 1 here. Can you please simply hand through return values, so
that if hvm_save_entry() ever obtains a new possible return value,
this will be handed through find without having to touch unrelated code?
> + return 0;
I don't understand anyway why you didn't pick the simpler
return hvm_save_entry(VMCE_VCPU, v->vcpu_id, h, &ctxt);

Style. I'm pretty sure you were asked before to go through and
check your additions for style.

This is way too generic an identifier name. And it's not helpful at
all without other possible values also enumerated. And please
take "enumerated" as a hint ... Otoh, looking at its use - this is
an agreement between hvm_save_cpu_ctxt() and
hvm_save_cpu_ctxt_one() only. Why does such need a globally
visible #define?
Jan

Jan also queried the return values from the _save_one functions. I assume you need to make your 'continue' value reasonably global such that it can still be used when you move the iteration up in the outer save function. He suggested passing through the return of hvm_save_entry() but we also need to be sure it won't clash will the 'continue' value in future so it may now be necessary to actually define what the possible return values are.

It returns 0 for ok and -1 for error so I think the return check could
be removed.
But whit this we will introduce a potential fail point if someone
changes the return of hvm_save_entry(). At this moment the patch works
both ways. Its up to Jan to have the last word here if he is sure that
I should just return hvm_save_entry().

So far I've not seen an approach that does not alter current behavior
and at the same time allows for the CONTINUE extension you mean to
introduce. One option is to have affected layers return an enum instead
of a pseudo-boolean.

In the first patches(introduce*) it is used only between save*() and
save_one*() funcs but later in patch 9 it is used in hvm_save() so it
has to be visible from both places. I can move the enum(for the return
values) declaration to save.h if that is a good place for it.

Yes, this would be more suitable a place.
