alsa-project/alsa-lib issue #488 was opened from andreygrozin:

After upgrading alsa-lib to 1.2.15 I get

grozin@localhost /home/Music $ qmmp <song>.mp3
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.2.15/work/alsa-lib-1.2.15/src/pcm/pcm.c:2722:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) [error.pcm] Unknown PCM cards.pcm.default
OutputALSA::initialize: error opening PCM device default
OutputWriter::initialize: unable to initialize output

and no sound. Similarly,

grozin@localhost /home/Music $ mpv <song>.mp3
[ffmpeg/demuxer] mp3: Estimating duration from bitrate, this may be inaccurate

After downgrading alsa-lib to 1.2.14 everything works fine again. This is on Gentoo Linux, see the Gentoo bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/967264
