I'm wondering if there may be a problem like a wrong default value in the register that indicates the number of cycles to wait on each access. This would explain some of the problems. Some people I know working on Geoport-based hardware had lots of troubles with the G3 machines. It looks like quickly repeated access to the data register will just cause corrupted datas to be transmitted. The problem is especially visible when DMA is used.
