Reproducibility: always
Severity: major
Priority: normal
Status: assigned
Distribution: Fedora Core 5
Kernel Version: 2.6.16-1.2080_FC5smp

Summary: Realtek 861 card not functional using included alsa
drivers
Description:
I am using the FC5 drivers to begin with. The packages are labeled version
1.0.11rc2. There are only a few options when I run alsamixer. Using the
stock drivers, I have these options:
Headphone switch
CD level
Mic level
Input Source switch(Mic/CD)
I compiled the 1.0.11rc5 drivers from source and rebooted. I now have
these channels when I run alsamixer:
Front switch
CD level
Mic level
Input Source switch(Mic/CD)
I tried compiling the 1.0.9 drivers from Realtek's website(said nothing
about the 861), but they did not build. In fact, the install script
overwrote my asound libraries requiring a package replacement to get back
to a sane state.
Please let me know if there is something more I can provide.

I can tell because if I use audacity and record and tap the microphone I
can see blips. I even went to the trouble of taking it to another computer
and playing something I recorded there. It does indeed work.
I could not get the patch to work because it was designed for the 2.4
kernel, I believe. I had all sorts of problems trying to even compile it.
I'm running 2.6 and have spent many hours fiddling with it.
I have just had a thought though. Maybe I could run a livecd on the 2.4
kernel and try that patched kernel. I'll try that and update people.

Wow, my last post made suprisingly little sense, even to me.
After some thought, I really don't want to mess around with a 2.4 kernel
unless there is some easy way I can do it.
When I start up a livecd, it's just going to use whatever sound drivers
the livecd likes, yeah?
Then if I compile that old patched thing, I won't be able to modprobe the
patched version because the snd will already be loading. And since it's a
livecd I can't restart and have it used the compiled module either.
Is there an easy way of doing this without installing a 2.4 kernel on my
machine? I really don't want to have to partition and crud, I've wasted so
much time on this computer already and I've got everything working apart
from this sound.
