I have similar problem here. HP Omnibook turns itself off long before
passive trip point is reached.

Try echo "1:2:3:4:5" > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/trip_points. Should work in 2.5.44; dunno
if 2.4. backport supports it.
