Or you could just turn to the National Security Agency, which is what Verano did. Verano recently announced it is using SELinux, developed by the NSA, as a secure server platform for software products that control and monitor industrial processes. Verano is releasing its Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software for SELinux. SCADA is designed to allow real-time, Internet-based control and monitoring of infrastructure at critical facilities. Security Enhanced Linux, or SELinux, was developed by the NSA as a version of the operating system with security enhancements beyond most commercial distributions of Linux. SELinux segments parts of Linux, and the applications that run on the server, into secure domains, which are aimed at preventing some of the "buffer overflow" and "string format" attacks that are used to compromise Linux systems. Verano's Enterprise Link and Real Time Application Platform (RTAP) are secure software products used by customers such as Boeing, ChevronTexaco and Bayer, and run on a variety of Unix platforms. The company says it went with SELinux for SCADA to provide an enhanced level of security. SELinux/SCADA is targeted as a platform for running monitoring and control software for facilities such as factories, power plants, oil and gas pipelines, as well as public transportation and utilities. _______________________________________________________________ To contact Phil Hochmuth: Phil Hochmuth is a Senior Writer for Network World, and a former systems integrator.
