His one complaint is that the OS is unfamiliar to him. I told him I'd post here asking about books that may be of assistance to him. He is running Mandrake 9, and just wants to use it for word-processing, email, music, etc (average desktop user). Games aren't a big issue, but it would be good to help him with them too.
