There are known configuration problems with 1.1.4.0.  Please try 1.1.4.15 - 
maybe that will solve it.

You might also need "xset fp rehash" after "mkfontdir".

Did you "su" to another user before trying to run it?
If so, you need to type "xhost +localhost" before doing so (or just open up 
another xterm now and type it).
