well, it does make a siginificant difference on my machine with a CD-ROM
If I do:
hdparm -d 1 /dev/cdrom
hdparm -t /dev/cdrom
I get about 2.4MB/sec
whereas before i used to only get ~1MB/s
which is not to say it's very fast or near what it probably should be
able to do, but it's definitely faster :)
