Now the only problem is that I tried it under skype (that's why I bought the headset), and under skype it is not working at all (strace revealed that skype is writing 0s to the sound device) - so I'm afraid this problem is out of the scope of this mailing list. Other applications (e.g. gnomemeeting) are working correctly - both for playback and recording through the microphone. Thanks for the help anyways. At least now I know that the problem is not in the headset.
