[-- Attachment #1: Type: TEXT/PLAIN, Size: 21540 bytes --]

It's been a week since -rc3, so now we have a -rc4.

The diffstat (and the appended shortlog) tells the story: a lot of small
fixes in various areas, mostly drivers. Input layer, infiniband, usb, net,
sound, vlb. Some cpufreq and architecture updates. Also some audit rule
improvements from Al & Amy.

Anyway, I'll be effectively offline for most of the following three weeks
(vacations and a funeral), and while I hope to be able to update my tree
every once in a while, I also asked Greg KH to maintain a git tree for any
worthwhile fixes.

We're pretty far into the 2.6.18 release cycle, and things seem to be in
reasonable shape, and Greg obviously is one of the stable kernel
maintainers anyway, so this should not be all that intrusive. The biggest
impact may be that the next few -rc's may be a bit sporadic.

Anyway, have fun, and if somebody sees a serious regression, keep Greg,
Andrew and obviously the kernel mailing list informed,

		Linus

And for people who want to watch that tree, it can be found at:
	git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/linux-2.6.git/

Right now it only has 2 JFS patches which it seems that Linus missed
before he did 2.6.18-rc4.

Hm, does anyone mind if I upload it? I can create it from Linus's git
tree, but don't want to be presumptuous.

Makes sense for someone to do it given Linus' absense for the next few
weeks. Consider it your first action item in your new role :)

That gets auto-generated after an upload.

Hi!
I am not the git user so I have one question:
Is there any way in this moment to download rc4 patch?

Best Regards!

Heh, ok. It's now done and pushed out to the proper places (hopefully).
If anyone notices that I didn't generate it correctly, please let me
know.

Oops, I created it myself and added it to the tree. Wonder if the
auto-generator will overwrite it...

Hope I didn't break anything.

It won't overwrite it; it'll probably be fine the way it is.

2.6.18 comes with ipt_statistic, but there is no way from userspace
(iptables) to use it (libipt_statistic.so simply does not come with the
latest iptables from svn). Does someone know what's going on?

I still have to add the userspace part to SVN.

Maybe better to put it in aoa/codecs/Kconfig.
The requirement of i2c is not in the core part of aoa driver but in
the codec support codes.

Should I2C_POWERMANC be selected, too?

Yes, each codec except for toonie should select I2C. Looks like I missed
that, sorry.

However, I was recently told that the expected behaviour with I2C (in a
thread discussing the motion sensor) that I2C should be depended upon,
not selected. I very much disagree (*), however, and would like to see a
select here.

Unfortunately, I started new work in Nürnberg, don't have any internet
at home right now and am not supposed to bring my own laptop to work.
Would someone else create the required patch?
> Should I2C_POWERMANC be selected, too?
It makes sense since the aoa driver is specific to machines that have
the i2c powermac bus, but I'm ambivalent about it. Though, does the G5
require I2C_POWERMAC? I'm not completely sure about that.

johannes

(*) I don't think it makes sense to bother someone configuring the
kernel with the some concept called I2C. The user should be able to just
select the sound driver necessary.

Hm, actually, Kconfig of snd-powermac uses depend I2C.
I'm also in favor of select. That's why I asked about I2C_POWERMAC.

The patch is below. It selects only I2C right now, though.

Olaf, could you check whether it works?

Someone who owned G5 must know...

That looks good to me, and should get rid of the build failure. However,
if one doesn't configure I2C_POWERMAC, no codec will ever be found at
runtime.

Don't worry, we can wait :)

Yes, that's my concern, too.

Maybe someone on linuxppc-dev can quickly check? Does a G5 use
I2C_POWERMAC for access to the codecs? I think it does, but there are
other I2C busses as well.

I'm not sure how much we should force the users to a sensible
configuration ;) But I suppose selecting I2C_POWERMAC is fine for all
relevant machines for now.

Agreed.

A relevant question: do we need I2C_POWERMAC for both onyx and tas?

Yes, there are PowerBooks and G5s with either. Actually, a bit more
thinking about this I'm pretty sure that it is used on all G5s by way of
how things are hooked up. There are SMU I2C busses too but they surely
don't connect any sound i2c stuff.

OK, now I added both I2C and I2C_POWERMAC and committed to ALSA tree.
