Me neither, that's why it's so odd. :-)

The mount fails immediately, IIRC with simply "Permission denied". Also,
existing mounts stop working (usually, they hang).

Mostly 2.6.17 and 2.6.18 on the clients; 2.6.17.11 on the server.
