looks like that might bite us back at some point:

man mmap:
MAP_ANON
            Synonym for MAP_ANONYMOUS.  Deprecated.

what about:

#ifndef MAP_ANONYMOUS
#define MAP_ANONYMOUS MAP_ANON
#endif
