the attachment worked.
i guess the problem was something to do with the non-ascii characters
in that document file.

i use kmail for about 18 months b/c it seems to handle both plain text
and attachments.
This is the first issue I've had with it (though I did
recently change to the kmail that comes with FC8 from
the old version that camem with opensuse 10.2)
