Btw, maybe this hints that we don't have a very appropiate name for
partmap/pc.c.

Initially, GRUB assumed that i386-pc always wants 'pc' partmap; later it
was fixed to support BIOS-based boot on GPT.  As it stands, I don't think
it makes much sense to relate msdos labels with PC.  In the original PC
it was an OS issue after all, just like FAT, since BIOS just loaded the MBR
and didn't care what the partition layout were.

What would you all think about renaming to partmap/msdos.c ?
