The patch I sent makes it rely on UUIDs unconditionaly because it was just a proof of concept, but my intention is to only use UUIDs when at grub-install time we determined that there's no reliable way to find the root drive. I would handle the following cases in the installer: - If the boot drive is the same as the root drive, the BIOS will tell us about it at boot time, so we don't use UUIDs. - If the root drive is LVM or RAID, we can reliably identify it by its LVM or RAID name, so there's no need to ressort to UUIDs. - If the boot drive is different than the root drive, often a device.map guess will work, but not always.
