OK, here is a log from a failing session in 2.6.28-rc6.
The firmware responds to everything without spinning the disk up,
until the first READ(10) is sent.

  # spin disk down artificially with
  # "modprobe -r firewire-sbp2" while manage_start_stop == 1
  #
  # then "modprobe firewire-sbp2"
