Good question..  It should probably come from the original $PWD.  Maybe we
should have "-C $DIR" simulate "--work-tree=$DIR --git=dir=$DIR/.git" ?

I envisioned these two as equivalent:

	git -C $DIR something
	cd $DIR ; git something
