Bad news for me: I was getting ready to start bisecting, and left the
screensaver running (with 7.6) - when I came back, the screen was again black
and the keyboard non-operational. After rebooting, I gave glxgears another try
- this time the window appeared but stayed black and the keyboard was again
dead.

So, 7.6 has the same problem, but not reliably. So this isn't a regression in
7.6.1. Not sure where to go from here (maybe the problem isn't in Mesa).
