The only thing really needed is a detection of existing LUKS headers and a strong warning that you will kill them by proceeding. For my side this closes the discussion. Any clunky cryptsetup-integrated backup is not a clean option, as "luksHeaderBackup" works just fine and avoids numerous possible problems with the other solutions proposed here.
