Actually I think it's much more likely that there's a small configurations problem. Please grab the latest fedora or ubuntu livecd and see whether it properly works. If that does, make sure you don't have any old xorg.conf lying around, latest releases of xf86-vidoe-intel, libdrm, mesa and kernel installed and that kernel modesetting is properly enabled (check module parameters in /sys/module/i915).
