The options you need to enable to use ftrace are:

    CONFIG_FUNCTION_TRACER
    CONFIG_FUNCTION_GRAPH_TRACER
    CONFIG_STACK_TRACER
    CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE

If you are willing to compile your own kernel, can you try going to
the latest 3.5 kernel and see if the problem still affects you there?
