If you install the userui binary in the initramfs, you'll be able to single
step through the process and modify the TuxOnIce debugging settings as you go -
perhaps this will help. Press 'P' to pause between steps, 0-9 to modify the
level of debugging info that's displayed (9 = max info, including all kernel
messages).
