Ah, I see. I guess with the addition of DEFAULT_PREFERENCE line the similarity is less than 75% with the original. I believe that is the default threshold, which you can lower by passing a parameter to either -M (for renames) or -C (for copies): $ git format-patch -C50% --find-copies-harder -1 You can play with it and decide for yourself - at some point the similarity is so low, the differences are larger than the entire new file. Plus git starts making mistakes on low similarity copies/renames...
