Good point. Something like this does indeed work:
c170:~ # cd -P /sys/block/xvda/device ; d=${PWD##*/} ; xenstore-read `xenstore-read device/${d/-/\/}/backend`/dev
hda
c170:/sys/devices/vbd-768 #
