The functional equivalent is:
     inode->fd = newfd;

newfd cannot contain -1 here, as checked a few lines above:
      newfd = openat(dir->fd, name, O_PATH | O_NOFOLLOW);
      if (newfd == -1) {
          goto out_err;
      }
