Oh wow. No, please no. You just broke reference counting rules.
Put this in your file-handle-specific structure, not in a global
structure, that's going to break into loads of tiny pieces if you ever
glance wrong at it...
And as always, when you save a pointer to something, you HAVE TO
REFERENCE COUNT IT! Otherwise it will go away from you without you
noticing and bad thigns will happen.
There's a reason we have the functions get_device(), don't ignore it
please...
