Subject: CVE-2026-45865: mctp i2c: initialise event handler read bytes
Date: Wed, 27 May 2026 14:18:27 +0200	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <2026052711-CVE-2026-45865-87b8@gregkh> (raw)

From: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@kernel.org>

Description
===========

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

mctp i2c: initialise event handler read bytes

Set a 0xff value for i2c reads of an mctp-i2c device. Otherwise reads
will return "val" from the i2c bus driver. For i2c-aspeed and
i2c-npcm7xx that is a stack uninitialised u8.

Tested with "i2ctransfer -y 1 r10@0x34" where 0x34 is a mctp-i2c
instance, now it returns all 0xff.

The Linux kernel CVE team has assigned CVE-2026-45865 to this issue.

Mitigation
==========

The Linux kernel CVE team recommends that you update to the latest
stable kernel version for this, and many other bugfixes. Individual
changes are never tested alone, but rather are part of a larger kernel
release. Cherry-picking individual commits is not recommended or
supported by the Linux kernel community at all. If however, updating to
the latest release is impossible, the individual changes to resolve this
issue can be found at these commits:
