# Short summary

This patch series extends the Qualcomm CAMSS (Camera Subsystem),
including CSID and CSIPHY components, to support C-PHY mode configuration.

# Background and motivation

Modern smartphone cameras increasingly rely on MIPI C-PHY rather than 
D-PHY, thanks to its higher data throughput and signal efficiency.
As a result, many OEMs adopt C-PHY interfaces for main (rear) cameras on
Qualcomm-based devices.

Until now, mainline Linux lacked C-PHY configuration support for Qualcomm
chipsets, preventing bring-up of primary camera sensors on several
Snapdragon platforms. This series closes that gap.

 - Introduces C-PHY configuration support for the CAMSS driver stack,
   covering both CSID and CSIPHY blocks.
 - Successfully enables C-PHY operation on the Snapdragon 845 platform.
 - Tested on OnePlus 6 and 6T phones running mainline Linux,
   using the Sony IMX519 main camera sensor.
 - The new configuration allows other chipsets versionsto enable C-PHY by
   simply adding corresponding sensor driver support and csiphy
   initialization data, following the example set for sdm845.

With this patch series, mainline Linux gains working C-PHY support for
Snapdragon 845, paving the way for improved main camera functionality
across many Qualcomm-based devices. The groundwork also simplifies
future enablement efforts for additional SoCs and sensors.

  changed parts to get feedback regarding to the direction of patchset.
- When switch to using odd bits, zeroed val which was left unitialized in v1.
- Accidentally missed archs added back in the commit moving lane regs to
  new location.
- Remove commit with reverting check for only D-PHY is supported and
  adjusted the check to also account for C-PHY.
- Documented link frequency calculation with defines. (Casey)
- Changed the cphy boolean to phy_cfg enum in the camss/camss-csiphy.

So far, only D-PHY mode was supported, which uses even bits when enabling
or masking lanes. For C-PHY configuration, the hardware instead requires
using the odd bits.

Since there can be unrecognized configuration allow returning failure.

[PATCH v6 2/8] media: qcom: camss: csiphy-3ph: Use odd bits for configuring C-PHY lanes

So far, only D-PHY mode was supported, which uses even bits when enabling
or masking lanes. For C-PHY configuration, the hardware instead requires
using the odd bits.

Since there can be unrecognized configuration allow returning failure.

Add a PHY configuration sequence for the sdm845 which uses a Qualcomm
Gen 2 version 1.1 CSI-2 PHY.

The PHY can be configured as two phase or three phase in C-PHY or D-PHY
mode. This configuration supports three-phase C-PHY mode.

Looking at csiphy_gen2_config_lanes() in this file, the switch statement
doesn't handle CSIPHY_SETTLE_CNT_HIGHER_BYTE:

so the higher byte would always be zero anyway, but it renders the
CSIPHY_SETTLE_CNT_HIGHER_BYTE tag meaningless.

That's not really feasible for non-Qualcomm, non-vendor document-enabled 
people to provide. For alot of the code that gets sent to upstream we 
have magic-numbers for registers only, published in downstream code.

We can't demand better documentation from community members who simply 
don't have it.

So, hex values from downstream in this case are acceptable.

OTOH vendors can and should enumerate their registers in an upstream 
submission.

I thought this was the policy indeed, but this made me wonder if ALL the magic numbers
in that file were added by volunteers. And weirdly I found this:

and possibly some other commits look like they were made by people on Qualcomm's
payroll. This specifically is QUIC, and idk how much documentation access they have,
but at minimum I assume they had access to the CTRLn register names? (fwiw it's entirely
plausible that the registers don't actually *have* better names).

I didn't follow the relevant ML discussions, but it seems to me like they should've
been told to document the registers?

And even if the documentation they have is not complete, seeing as they are being paid
by Qualcomm to work on this, would it be unreasonable to pressure Qualcomm to give them
documentation for the bitfields (which obviously has to exist *somewhere*, even if
the registers are free-form, the values do *something*).

There's alot of technical debt to digest, which I think should be solved 
in the new PHY API driver.

- Move to new driver
- Start enumerating registers correctly
- Transition to QMP PHY levels of lane config instead of long lists
   of "mission mode" writes.

If you ever rent a car in Ireland and get lost, you might ask a local 
"how do I get to Tip from here" and we'd scratch our heads under a flat 
cap and say something like "ah well shure, I wouldn't start from here" ;)

Does this regression invert the multiplier and divisor constants for C-PHY?
The V4L2 documentation and standard C-PHY formula define the pixel rate
calculation as pixel_rate = link_freq * 2 * nr_of_lanes * 16 / 7 /
bits_per_sample.

By passing mul = 16 * bpp and div = 14 * num_lanes to v4l2_get_link_freq(),
the resulting calculated frequency appears to be over 5 times higher than the
correct value, which might render C-PHY unusable.

This isn't a bug introduced by this patch, but does camss_parse_endpoint_node()
properly validate the Device Tree endpoint port? Currently, vep.base.port is
assigned directly to csd->interface.csiphy_id without bounds checking:

camss_parse_endpoint_node() {
    ...
    csd->interface.csiphy_id = vep.base.port;
    ...
}

Then later in camss_subdev_notifier_bound(), this unchecked ID is used as
an index:

camss_subdev_notifier_bound() {
    ...
    u8 id = csd->interface.csiphy_id;
    struct csiphy_device *csiphy = &camss->csiphy[id];

    csiphy->cfg.csi2 = &csd->interface.csi2;
    ...
}

Can a malformed Device Tree cause an arbitrary out-of-bounds pointer write
here?

There are two paths:

1. hardcoded driver (not going to be upstreamed, but works today with libcamera)
    - sdm845-next git tree[1] (imx519 camera for sdm845-oneplus-common.dtsi)

2. mipi-ccs driver (tested locally with imx519 on D-PHY, but doesn't with C-PHY 
yet or we haven't found right frequency which mipi-ccs would agree on)
   a. needs C-PHY div/multiplier fix (I assume)
   b. needs metadata patches until [2] get merged
   c. needs initial sequence to be uploaded and packaged for distros
   d. needs libcamera integration
