Subject: CVE-2026-52967: smb/client: fix possible infinite loop and oob read in symlink_data()
Date: Wed, 24 Jun 2026 17:29:51 +0100	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <2026062438-CVE-2026-52967-0fd6@gregkh> (raw)

From: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@kernel.org>

Description
===========

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

smb/client: fix possible infinite loop and oob read in symlink_data()

On 32-bit architectures, the infinite loop is as follows:

  len = p->ErrorDataLength == 0xfffffff8
  u8 *next = p->ErrorContextData + len
  next == p

On 32-bit architectures, the out-of-bounds read is as follows:

  len = p->ErrorDataLength == 0xfffffff0
  u8 *next = p->ErrorContextData + len
  next == (u8 *)p - 8

The Linux kernel CVE team has assigned CVE-2026-52967 to this issue.

Mitigation
==========

The Linux kernel CVE team recommends that you update to the latest
stable kernel version for this, and many other bugfixes. Individual
changes are never tested alone, but rather are part of a larger kernel
release. Cherry-picking individual commits is not recommended or
supported by the Linux kernel community at all. If however, updating to
the latest release is impossible, the individual changes to resolve this
issue can be found at these commits:
