The cleanup function bnx2x_release_firmware() frees the same three pointers unconditionally, so if init_firmware fails and release_firmware is later called (e.g. from __bnx2x_remove or through the function state machine), all three are freed a second time. Set each pointer to NULL after kfree() in the error path so that the subsequent kfree(NULL) in bnx2x_release_firmware() is a safe no-op. The Linux kernel CVE team has assigned CVE-2026-89582 to this issue. Affected and fixed versions =========================== Issue introduced in 2.6.31 with commit 94a78b79cb5f14c09a42522738d6694c6a1cdd20 and fixed in 6.12.109 with commit dc98e727b9cfc5e19c796bf893878153f00b222b Issue introduced in 2.6.31 with commit 94a78b79cb5f14c09a42522738d6694c6a1cdd20 and fixed in 6.18.50 with commit 4d36e38e48340a1ccf92a98c7a22d07a954e5aa3 Issue introduced in 2.6.31 with commit 94a78b79cb5f14c09a42522738d6694c6a1cdd20 and fixed in 7.2.4 with commit a142c024f07d623e2b6b25943f6c36d4b6b0b4c6 Issue introduced in 2.6.31 with commit 94a78b79cb5f14c09a42522738d6694c6a1cdd20 and fixed in 7.3-rc1 with commit d2796ffe38cb4155afe0eab23636295b096c27a5 Please see https://www.kernel.org for a full list of currently supported kernel versions by the kernel community. Unaffected versions might change over time as fixes are backported to older supported kernel versions. The official CVE entry at https://cve.org/CVERecord/?id=CVE-2026-89582 will be updated if fixes are backported, please check that for the most up to date information about this issue. Affected files ============== The file(s) affected by this issue are: drivers/net/ethernet/broadcom/bnx2x/bnx2x_main.c Mitigation ========== The Linux kernel CVE team recommends that you update to the latest stable kernel version for this, and many other bugfixes. Individual changes are never tested alone, but rather are part of a larger kernel release. Cherry-picking individual commits is not recommended or supported by the Linux kernel community at all. If however, updating to the latest release is impossible, the individual changes to resolve this issue can be found at these commits: https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/dc98e727b9cfc5e19c796bf893878153f00b222b https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4d36e38e48340a1ccf92a98c7a22d07a954e5aa3 https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/a142c024f07d623e2b6b25943f6c36d4b6b0b4c6 https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d2796ffe38cb4155afe0eab23636295b096c27a5
