Each failed inter-server COPY leaks one nfsd_file, pinning file/inode/dentry/vfsmount. Fix by setting status and jumping to out: instead of returning directly. The Linux kernel CVE team has assigned CVE-2026-89680 to this issue. Affected and fixed versions =========================== Issue introduced in 5.6 with commit ce0887ac96d35c7105090e166bb0807dc0a0e838 and fixed in 6.12.109 with commit 1a6a41b848455bf6ba2c9da2dfb0730e608ce7ab Issue introduced in 5.6 with commit ce0887ac96d35c7105090e166bb0807dc0a0e838 and fixed in 6.18.50 with commit 424d5c95108a4809b832cb0a312c61de4aec0078 Issue introduced in 5.6 with commit ce0887ac96d35c7105090e166bb0807dc0a0e838 and fixed in 7.2.4 with commit 6ed8d6de7ec90c4ba84eb82673058f506e5777fd Issue introduced in 5.6 with commit ce0887ac96d35c7105090e166bb0807dc0a0e838 and fixed in 7.3-rc1 with commit 88a76145451d703eedd867b5989bf73d17340399 Please see https://www.kernel.org for a full list of currently supported kernel versions by the kernel community. Unaffected versions might change over time as fixes are backported to older supported kernel versions. The official CVE entry at https://cve.org/CVERecord/?id=CVE-2026-89680 will be updated if fixes are backported, please check that for the most up to date information about this issue. Affected files ============== The file(s) affected by this issue are: fs/nfsd/nfs4proc.c Mitigation ========== The Linux kernel CVE team recommends that you update to the latest stable kernel version for this, and many other bugfixes. Individual changes are never tested alone, but rather are part of a larger kernel release. Cherry-picking individual commits is not recommended or supported by the Linux kernel community at all. If however, updating to the latest release is impossible, the individual changes to resolve this issue can be found at these commits: https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/1a6a41b848455bf6ba2c9da2dfb0730e608ce7ab https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/424d5c95108a4809b832cb0a312c61de4aec0078 https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/6ed8d6de7ec90c4ba84eb82673058f506e5777fd https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/88a76145451d703eedd867b5989bf73d17340399
