One such consumer is the WEXT compatibility code, which appends a WEP key length for each WEP cipher entry it sees. Repeated WEP entries can therefore overflow the fixed iw_range::encoding_size array returned by SIOCGIWRANGE. Reject duplicate cipher suite entries in wiphy_register() instead. This keeps the cipher suite invariant in one place and makes malformed wiphy descriptions fail early with -EINVAL, rather than relying on a single cfg80211 user to handle duplicates correctly. The Linux kernel CVE team has assigned CVE-2026-97518 to this issue. Affected and fixed versions =========================== Fixed in 6.12.111 with commit 1305f8b925fe92edf5fec183588dfc7db719180b Fixed in 6.18.53 with commit 4cbb2360f4d8c29e67bc7a8bf6ba0ae096583923 Fixed in 7.2 with commit 7187d145d9042b037e4f10538f70cf95e380219f Please see https://www.kernel.org for a full list of currently supported kernel versions by the kernel community. Unaffected versions might change over time as fixes are backported to older supported kernel versions. The official CVE entry at https://cve.org/CVERecord/?id=CVE-2026-97518 will be updated if fixes are backported, please check that for the most up to date information about this issue. Affected files ============== The file(s) affected by this issue are: net/wireless/core.c Mitigation ========== The Linux kernel CVE team recommends that you update to the latest stable kernel version for this, and many other bugfixes. Individual changes are never tested alone, but rather are part of a larger kernel release. Cherry-picking individual commits is not recommended or supported by the Linux kernel community at all. If however, updating to the latest release is impossible, the individual changes to resolve this issue can be found at these commits: https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/1305f8b925fe92edf5fec183588dfc7db719180b https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4cbb2360f4d8c29e67bc7a8bf6ba0ae096583923 https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/7187d145d9042b037e4f10538f70cf95e380219f
