Heloo, thanks for the response.
i am not a linux techy. I have no idea where to begin. i already knew
that the driver was on the system but I have no idea what to do about it.
I was hoping for a lead to a really good how to to compile the layla24
module.

Download the files from alsa-project.org and compile and install them just
like any other program:

./configure --with-cards=layla24[,other cards] [other options]
make
make install

hello, ALL suggestions, including a guy that actually is part of the Ubuntu
team who walked me through the installation, were unsuccesful. This
layla24 is in excellent working condition. RUns fine on XP.
Try to install the drivers for ubuntu dapper and all I get is "---no
soundcard found---"
I realize this is not a common card in use since it is considered pro
sound, however wouldn't it be just as easy having a single install package
that will install the drivers?
I am not aprogrammer so forgive the naive statement, but nvivida has a
package that installs, just a copnfig enable does the trick. i am not
clear why this is not like that.
unfortunately this is for a client. He wants his layla14 installed on
ubuntu Dapper, even after telling him there are nohighend apps for
recording in linux.
He has insisted.
However, i still cannot get the darn thing to work.
The system recognizes the chip on the layla24 card and that is is.
It does not recognize the card at all.
 Thanks

After you try to load the module, type "dmesg" and check if there are error
messages.

alsa is distributed as sources. If you want binary drivers, ask Ubuntu.
It's impossible for me to provide binary drivers. Nvidia is a different
case because they don't disclose the sources (and IMHO it doesn't comply
with the GPL, but this is another story).

The most common problem with the drivers for Echoaudio cards is that the
user forgets to install alsa-firmware. And did alsa-driver compile and
install without problems ?

After you try to load the module, type "dmesg" and check if there are error
messages.

alsa is distributed as sources. If you want binary drivers, ask Ubuntu.
It's impossible for me to provide binary drivers. Nvidia is a different
case because they don't disclose the sources (and IMHO it doesn't comply
with the GPL, but this is another story).

The most common problem with the drivers for Echoaudio cards is that the
user forgets to install alsa-firmware. And did alsa-driver compile and
install without problems ?

Hello, yes the driver compiles without any problems.
 i reinstalled dapper. I have downloded these files;
alsa-driver-1.0.11rc3
alsa-source_1.0.10+1.0.11rc3
alsa-firmware-1.0.11rc3
alsa-tools-1.0.11rc3
alsa-utils-1.0.11rc3
in which order are these installed?
Can I then follow your sites how to listed under Layla24?
The second how to on your site, listed under Layla24 talks of hotplug
scripts but according to ubuntu scripts/init has been removed because it
is taken care of by kernel.
So at least that part of the how to is out of date.
I apologize for my ingorance around this issue. i am in no way trying to
tax your patience. I am sure that this is not exactly what you like to
do.
Ardour, apparently my client is aware of this and one reason he wasnts his
layla card with ubuntu.
I have donwloade it to take a look at it.
Thanks

You can compile them in any order. I don't know what
alsa-source_1.0.10+1.0.11rc3 is. If the notes I wrote I refer to the
official alsa releases only (the files downloadable from
alsa-project.org).
The hotplug interface is in the kernel, but it needs userspace programs to
work. Those hutlplug script are the official scripts but you can use any
other implementation. It is important that they look for firmware files
inside /lib/firmware/ . Btw, are you sure the driver can't find the
firmware (does "dmegs" show "Firmware not available" error message ?) ?

You have to install lib before tools and utils, otherwise you just can't
compile them. There are not other dependencies. If you don't say what is
the problem I can't help.

You have to install lib before tools and utils, otherwise you just can't
compile them. There are not other dependencies. If you don't say what is
the problem I can't help.

familiar with alsa installation it turned out not to work.

You can also try to enable debugging in alsa-driver by passing the
"--with-debug=full" option to configure. It make the driver print a lot of
stuff in the system logs. Maybe when you load the module it prints
something useful.
Also, make sure the modules are installed (dir
/lib/modules/2.6.14.2/kernel/sound/pci/echoaudio/ (you kernel version may
differ)) and the firmware binaries are installed (dir /lib/firmware/ea/).
Type "modprobe snd-<yourcard>" and then "dmesg" to see the debug messages.
You may need to unload the modules if they're already loaded. Use "lsmod"
to the the list and "modprobe -r <name>" to onload a module.

The "Unknown symbol" errors mean your build or install is incorrect. Most
commonly it means you did not remove all the old ALSA modules before
installing new ones (none of the automated tools do this for you, you have
to remove all snd-* modules manually, then modprobe the new ones, or just
reboot)

The "Unknown symbol" errors mean your build or install is incorrect. Most
commonly it means you did not remove all the old ALSA modules before
installing new ones (none of the automated tools do this for you, you have
to remove all snd-* modules manually, then modprobe the new ones, or just
reboot)
