Hi, kc:

 It sounds like your "Xircom Realport card modem"
is a telephone modem.

 The telephone system is full duplex.

 The radios I am familiar with (ham radio) are half duplex.

 Telephone modems 'will not work' over half duplex circuits.

 What are you trying to do?
