Your right that it is not easy.

I was under the impression that something like:

----
      	pcm.first {
              	type hw
                 card 0
		device 0
      	}

       	ctl.first {
              	type hw
              	card 0
      	}

      	pcm.second {
              	type hw
                 card 1
		device 0
      	}

       	ctl.second {
              	type hw
              	card 1
      	}

	pcm_slave.sl {
      		pcm second
      		rate 44100
	}

	pcm.c1 {
         	type copy
         	slave sl
	}
			
	ctl.c1 {
		type hw
         	card 0		
	}
----

Would allow you to do what you want. The plugins docs says it will copy 
from master pcm to the slave pcm. I assume that the master is the first 
device hw:0,0.

Did you try anything like the above?

I would but I'm testing alsaplayer and it is having problems with 
releasing the ALSA pcm device currently so I have to shut down first.
