The SPDIF out should is reported to work with Hercules Game Theater XP, and a "Terratec card" (dont remember exaclty which one), the SPDIF in, is still experimental, dont expect it to work. At the end of the ALSA matrix page you got the following note: "*NOTE:* /Just because an I/O is listed does NOT mean it is guaranteed to be supported.
