This sounds to me like the symptom one gets when the disk or disk controller locks up on IDE (yes, I know you're running SCSI, but do you have an IDE CD in the box, or eomething?) It still leaves me wondering if the machine has hardware problems. How long have you been allowed to leave the box running to see if the problem goes away?? One thing I'd suggest is opening a window doing a 'tail -f /var/log/mes= sages' If you're lucky you'll read complaints while they're still in the cashe= and before the OS tries to write them out to disk.
