Okay, here's the upshot after reading all your replies (many thanks!). 
Only one setting was needed: $_graphics (1). Of course that means I can 
only run that as root (or it has no effect). No other settings talked 
about here helped, other than that one.

I also find that Shift Tab does indeed work, as long as I use rawkeyboard.
