If you try this on a Linux system with the sysstat package installed you 
might be surprised... (That's why i said the Linux part in the mentioned 
book is outdated: it does not tell you that sar is available and recommends 
to parse the proc files)

It that is sufficient information for your purposes i can not say, but for 
most people that is all they will ever need.
