The sound appears *only* on the rear speakers. The front speakers remain silent. But you mentioned that 6-channel playback work, so basically all channels work unless you pass 2-channel samples? Anyway, try to update alsa-lib to the latest version. There were bugs in alsa-lib regarding channel routing.
