I have warning messages whenever I commit changes:

"cvs commit: warning:  Set to use deprecated info format strings.  Establish
compatibility with the new info file format strings (add a temporary '1' in
all info files after each '%' which doesn't represent a literal percent)
and set UseNewInfoFmtStrings=yes in CVSROOT/config.  After that, convert
individual command lines and scripts to handle the new format at your
leisure."

I suspect that you updated to a 1.12.x release of CVS while we were
using 1.11.x before. 1.11 is the Stable branch, 1.12 is the Feature
branch. I'd suggest that you move back to 1.11.15, which should work
better for us (and is safe).

which I thought was being used for the server, but perhaps not.

There seems to be some sort of trouble with the SF
CVS- trying to browse the CVS version (the only
remotely up-to-date one) gets a 502 Proxy error, and
logging in anonymously gets:

It seems that this is an ELKS-specific CVS issue.  I tried another 
project, LNG, and it doesn't do this on the CVS system.

Of course, the whole ELKS project pages are pretty broken, and I'm 
trying to get an admin to make me able to fix it up.

For now, you can grab a snapshot of 0.9.0rc6 from
ftp://ftp.coelacanth.com/pub/audio/alsa-0.9.0rc6.tar.gz
This is close to being the most recent CVS release (13 January), and
includes the HDSP MIDI patch to alsa-kernel/pci/rme9652/hdsp.c.

Yes, the archives in cvsexport are checked-out development trees, so
you'll want to run 'cvscompile' in each directory, just as if you'd
checked them out with CVS yourself.

(The archives in cvsroot are images of the CVS repository itself, and
aren't what you want.)

Hi, good morning.

I just have one question. I am looking for a software that can allow me to
mantain differents versions of the same document, version 1, version 2,
version 3 and so on. What I want is that the user ( based on a
username/password ) can upload the document ( via Web Interface ) and once
the document is at the server everybody can make comments, opinions, etc
about it. Is it possible to do this with CVS? or do you know of an
open-soruce software that does something like this?, or perhaps something
commercial?

CVS would work, but if you're only looking to
handle a single document (or a small number of
them), rcs may be more in line with your needs.
Both are typically installed in your favorite
distro, or available via freshmeat or sourceforge
if you want to get the latest... You'd also have
to hunt around for a web interface frontend, but
there's plenty of those around - can't recommend
any particular one off the top of my head.

I tried to use CVS and wanted to keep all files stored in there. I imported
directories containing complete Linux distributions....

I ran into problems with those files:
- /dev/xxx
- binary, executable files

I need ideas, scripts
- How to preserve the permissions for the /dev and executable files.
  (The PRESERVEPERMISSIONS switch is too strong and complains
    about 'hard linkage errors' when rebuilding binaries and committing
    to the repo again!)
- How to distinguish automatically between binaries and text files.
  (Automatic control of the -kb switch!)

Write a script that creates them or moves them to the place where they
should be.

Another, slightly perversive approach is to make /dev/console a regular
file and create other devices at the run time from rc.sysinit. It works
for me.

Don't put them on CVS. Write another script that compiles them from the
sources. Make exceptions only for huge files that take too much time to
compile and are not going to change often (e.g. libc, libstdc++)

Set them from scripts.

I have just 6 binary files on my CVS (one being logo.gif - the penguin
from the kernel sources). It's not worth the trouble IMHO.

I've just commited Linux 2.2.8 into the CVS archive.  Once this is
finished I'll create a branch named linux_2_2 for the 2.2 development
in the archive.  If you just do ``cvs update'' you'll stay on the
mainline of the development, that is 2.3.  If you want to work with
the 2.2 sources then you'll have to add the option ``-r linux_2_2''
to your next cvs update or cvs co command.

I'm already running 2.2.9 and 2.3.1 on my Indy but the checkin is that
slow that I won't commit these versions into the CVS archive now.

I would appreciate if it was possible to continue using 32 bit code on the Indy,
even if you add 64 bit code. Maybe we can add it as an option in the kernel
configuration scripts?

I'll implement MIPS64 as a new architecture just like sparc64 is different
from sparc.  The changes are too big and I finally want to use the
freedem to use all the tricks in the box.  It also means that we'll have
some more of a maintenance pain for the common code for mips and mips64.

Although CVS doesn't appear to be honouring the CVSROOT/readers file,
:pserver: checkins don't succeed because there's no /var/tmp in the
chroot'd area.  Not optimal, but it keeps things safe for now.
