Modem problem

I have an Intel 536EP modem that I have finally been able to get working 
in Linux. It works in everything except dosemu. When I add $_com2 = 
"/dev/modem" to dosemu.conf my system locks when I try to start dosemu. 
Hard lock requiring a reboot. I also have a modem at /dev/ttyS0 and it 
works fine. I've checked permissions and everything seems to be correct. 
Can anyone tell me why this is happening?
